Not necessarily. Many of the most effective controls — such as MFA, automatic updates, and regular backups — are built into tools you probably already use. Paid security software can add an extra layer, but it is not the place to start.

Formal training courses are not the only option. A short team conversation once a quarter, sharing a real example of a suspicious message, costs nothing and builds awareness over time. Free guidance is also available from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

How do I know if my business has already been targeted?

Common signs include unexpected password-reset emails, staff reporting strange messages, unfamiliar logins in your account activity, or systems running slowly for no obvious reason. If you spot any of these, change your passwords and enable MFA straight away.

Is a DDoS attack likely to affect a very small business?
